The cocoa commission of Nicaragua.

The Cocoa Commission of Nicaragua is a space for private dialogue with a value chain approach, involve 47 companies between producer organizations, exporters, academia, processors, service providers and facilitators, all of which contribute to the development of the sector cocoa of Nicaragua.

The purpose of the Cocoa Commission of Nicaragua is unite and support the development of the cocoa private sector, for which it identifies, proposes, elaborates and proposes policy initiatives, norms or facilitation mechanisms before the public sector to influence the public policies of the sector.

The Association of Producers and Exporters of Nicaragua - APEN, occupies the Technical Secretariat of the Cocoa Commission of Nicaragua and brings together many of the actors of the cocoa value chain.

The German Initiative on Sustainable Cocoa (GISCO) is a joint initiative of the Federal Government, the German chocolate industry and retail as well as civil society. GISCO brings together relevant actors from Germany with those of producing countries and international initiatives. Swiss Platform for Sustainable Cocoa

The Swiss Platform for Sustainable Cocoa is a multi-stakeholder initiative launched by the Swiss choco-late industry, the federal government and civil society to promote sustainability in the cocoa sector. Ac-tors engaged in the entire cocoa value chain joined the association to enhance the social, environmental and economic sustainability with the aim of improving the living conditions of cocoa producers and their families and creating an attractive cocoa sector for present and future generations. The targets are to source 80% of the imported cocoa from sustainable production by 2025 and to make a measurable con-tribution the Sustainable Development Goals.




Sierra Leone - Product Monitoring Board

The Produce Monitoring Board is a government owned institution established by an Act of Parliament with a mandate to regulate the general operations of the cocoa sector and many other agricultural crops.The primary obligation of the Produce Monitoring Board is ensuring the production, marketing and export of high quality cocoa beans for both the local and international market.

The Produce Monitoring Board operates an extension department for the purpose of ensuring that farmers are well capacitated and provided with the necessary support in their farming activities.Cacao is largely produced in the South – East region in Sierra Leone, which includes Bo / Pujehun District, Kenema District, Kailahun District and Kono District.

Cocoa is the major agricultural export crop in Sierra Leone within an average export of 14,000 tons per season.Sierra Leone was once renowned and esteemed as a fine and premium producer of quality cacao in terms of the bean size, content and flavor and was receiving a premium of 50 pounds per ton at the international market.With the establishment of the PMB, Sierra Leone is poised to regain its past glory by intensifying quality checks and ensuring that only high-quality cocoa beans are exported from Sierra Leone.

In a bid to reassess and evaluate the level of progress made over the years in improving the quality of Sierra Leone’s cocoa beans, the Produce Monitoring Board competed in the 2017 Cocoa of Excellence program by submitting samples of cocoa beans collected from farmers, which eventually qualified Sierra Leone’s cocoa beans as one of the winners of the prestigious award in the global cocoa sector, the International Cocoa Award.
As a country, we strive to improve on the quality of cocoa beans exported to the International market, which serves as a niche, whilst we continue to push for increased production and productivity.

The product portfolio for cocoa processing includes key components such as cleaning, winnowing, alkalizing / sterilizing, roasting, grinding, pressing and pulverizing. Depending on the customer’s preferences continuous cocoa bean roasting and cocoa nib roasting systems are available.
